EXPLORATION CAPABILITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, PETRONAS

PETRONAS, the Malaysian National Oil Company, engaged RPS as their partner to develop and implement a new approach to the training of their subsurface professionals. Collaborating with subject matter experts and Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS(INSTEP), a PETRONAS technical learning solutions partner, set-up to accelerate the development of human capital in Oil & Gas industry through experiential learning, our team created a custom Exploration Capability Development Program (ECDP).

PETRONAS wanted their technical staff to undergo a comprehensive, integrated training program. Each member of staff is expected to have a competent understanding of a range of topics and concepts and the program needed to cover each of these.

The curriculum delivered in the ECDP needed to integrate the skills and knowledge across a range of geoscience topics and provide an Action-Based Learning approach for course participants.

Action-Based learning places emphasis on participants engaging with examples and exercises, combined with instructor-led lectures, with the content made relevant to the different experience levels of PETRONAS’ employees.

It was also essential that PETRONAS had access to a learning management system that could host course materials, exercises and track progress. Defining, designing and delivering a robust, flexible and intuitive LMS that meets all the requirements of stakeholders can be a complex exercise.

A tailored curriculum, blended learning and an easy to use LMS, were the essential elements needed to deliver the training PETRONAS required.

Drawing on RPS’ extensive network of subsurface professionals, we identified several subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop and deliver the required course curriculum and oversaw the design and implementation of a fully customised eLearning portal, the ‘Learning Hub’. The hub houses all course content including, 3D models, interactive guides, videos and assessments. Through interactive and flexible modules, learners have access to exclusive materials and content before, during and after instructor-led sessions.

Learning Hub Composite Petronas News

The RPS team delivered the Learning Hub and 10 weeks of classroom instruction four times in 2019. Over 150 PETRONAS personnel completed the training. In 2020, RPS will deliver an additional four sessions.

PETRONAS’ Learning Hub enables staff to engage with course materials and interactive content more easily. Learning materials are available for reference at any time and can be accessed on the job, making training very relevant.
