Customised e-learning solves skill shortage for US energy agency

Ensuring staff have the right skills and the latest technical knowledge is a challenge many organisations face in the energy sector. Technology, best practices and regulations are changing rapidly. E-learning that is flexible and fit-for-purpose delivers knowledge effectively and efficiently so staff can move from learning to doing.

Our client sought to strengthen skills within their department and build knowledge in the oil, gas, and geothermal sectors. Over the next 20 months, RPS designed and delivered high-quality e-learning training modules developed by energy training professionals. Using decades of deep expertise in advising the oil and gas and renewables sectors, we significantly upskilled our client's workforce of geologists, chemical engineers and mechanical engineers, delivering an e-learning program of over a hundred hours of learning.

A skills shortage that needed addressing - fast

Our client, a US state agency, had a very specific skill shortage within the subjects of well permitting, injection project review, aquifer exemption review, and advanced skills in casing, cement, and water quality evaluation to ensure groundwater protection. These skills would be necessary to sustain the high performance of their workforce and operational safety. Therefore, the agency required energy training solutions from a provider with direct experience in these areas and experience in curriculum development and e-learning design.

E-learning solutions developed by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from the energy sector

With decades of experience in the oil and gas sector and renewables, from providing technical advice and support on major energy projects around the globe to e-learning and blended learning solutions for energy professionals, RPS was in a perfect place to lend support to training this workforce. In addition, we drew from experience in providing similar online and blended learning solutions to organisations worldwide.

We set up regular meetings with our client to initially fully understand their training requirements and set up regular key updates on content development. We provided interactive e-learning content with set learning objectives and scored assessments in an accessible and standardised format for e-Learning and also created and provided PDF versions of all our training material.

RPS is an authorised provider accredited by the International Association for Continued Education and Training (IACET) and issue Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Despite Covid-19 causing unforeseen challenges to the development team with time constraints, RPS kept this training project on track, meeting the deadline with determination, diligence and enthusiasm.

We developed four courses with detailed training in petroleum engineering, open-hole logging, water quality, casing, and cementing.  There were initially five courses, but with strategic reviews by our Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), we combined two of them into one course. SMEs are at the very heart of our training solutions. They each have vast experience in their respective technical fields. As a result, we successfully delivered 27 high-quality e-learning modules, which were equivalent to over 100 hours of learning time.

Elearning For The Energy Sector

"To develop high-quality, flexible, and rich e-learning training solutions, you'll need subject matter experts that know the content inside and out. As the subject matter expert for petroleum engineering on this project, my primary responsibility is to ensure the course material covers the required topics. I make sure that the information is up to date, accurate, and valuable, considering the clients' business goals and learning objectives. In addition, I work closely with the instructional design team to add interactive content and learning assessments that encourage engagement and retention throughout the course."
