Workshop - The Application of 3D Visualisation in Training for Subsurface Geoscientists and Engineers

A combination of the restrictions on travel over the past 2 years, and the development of accessible technologies for the capturing and visualisation of imagery, has resulted in a significant increase in the use of 3D images in learning and development.

On Thursday 24 February RPS held a workshop bringing together people with different perspectives of the application of 3D visualisation in training sharing experience and best practices. The concept of ‘bringing field geology into the virtual classroom’ brings many benefits, but we wanted to explore what are the contexts in which it work most effectively, and what lessons can we learn from case studies of the applications of the technologies?

Contributions included short presentations by technical leads who have adopted the use of 3D imagery in courses, course instructors who have led classes using 3D imagery, instructional designers who have incorporated the technologies into training programs and software developers who have designed platforms for VR and desktop applications.

This workshop was organised in collaboration with Imaged Reality Ltd.

Presenters and title of presentations

John Thurmond, Principle Advisor Geoscience (Emerging Technology), Hess Corporation - 'Innovative Training in a Virtual World'

Henk Jaap Kloosterman, Head of Strategic Accounts L&D RPS Energy Training - 'Eagle Ford Virtual Field Trip (Shell)'

Philip Hirst, Consultant Sedimentologist, Visiting Professor at Royal Holloway, University of London - 'Delivering 3D Outcrop Training in a Virtual Environment - A Tutors Perspective'

Gary Nichols, Head of Technical Development, RPS Energy Training - 'Introduction & 3D Outcrop Imagery in Training Programmes'

Claudia Ruiz-Graham, Founder & CEO - Imaged Reality Ltd. - 'Virtual field trips in Immersive Environments'

Tomos Davies, Learning Technology Manager - RPS Energy Training - 'Immersive Content in L&D'

Discussion and workshop recording

Over 60 people joined the event from companies and organisations all over the world and contributed to a discussion session on topics prompted by the different presentations.

There was a widely-held view that 3D outcrop images of field locations provide a valuable additional tool in classroom, field and virtual training contexts aiding both interpretation and explanation of geological features.
