Oil and Gas | Production Engineering

Production Operations

Course Code: N979
Instructors:  Ivor EllulVictor Taylor
Course Outline:  Download
Format and Duration:
4 days

Summary

This course provides an introduction to oilfield operations, equipment, practices and terminology. It covers equipment from the reservoir to the sales point, discussing function and malfunction, routine operations and day-to-day activity. The unique language of the oilfield is presented.

Duration and Training Method

A four-day classroom course consisting of lectures with worked examples, hands-on exercises and discussion. Includes a visit to an oilfield supply company.

Course Overview

Paticipants will learn to:

1. Establish the requirements of well completion including casing design and primary cementing.
2. Determine well completion strategies including horizontal and dual well completions.
3. Verify important considerations in well completion specifically completion and production fluids, pressure and temperature, safety valves and well head design.
4. Illustrate the range of surface facilities available, specifically oil and gas separators and water disposal systems.
5. Analyse different artificial lift systems and illustrate how  and why certain types are used.
6. Compare common pumpigg methods including mechanical beam pumps and electric submersible pumps.
7. Analyse well performance from naturally flowing, gas lift and artificial-lift systems.

Production operations is a complex task that requires collaboration between many disciplines including subsurface and surface teams. This course will teach how these individual disciplines combine and contribute to the optimal delivery of an operating petroleum asset.

This course is intended for entry level engineers and others who have limited or no exposure to oilfield operations. The course is deliberately designed to be broad in its coverage.  It is also suitable for experienced engineers that are new to Petroleum Engineering.

Ivor Ellul

Background
Dr. Ellul began his career in the oil and gas industry in 1980, in West Germany, as a design engineer on pipeline, storage tank, and refinery systems.  After specializing in the modeling of multiphase flow in pipelines, he worked for a number of years in the area of numerical modeling of single and multi-phase pipelines under steady-state and transient conditions.  He has been involved in various pipeline simulation studies for clients worldwide.  Recent experience includes various executive positions in the upstream area of the oil and gas industry.

Dr. Ellul is industry lecturer to the Petroleum Engineering Department of Imperial College, University of London where he lectures the M.S. course on pipeline and process engineering. He has held advisory posts on the board of the Faculty of Petroleum Engineering of the University of Houston and participated on a number of SPE committees at both regional and international level. He was a member of the Advisory Board of Energy Ventures, a Norwegian venture capital firm.

Victor Taylor

Background
In 2012, and with over 25 years of experience in the petroleum industry, Mr. Taylor joined RPS where he currently directs reservoir surveillance of conventional and unconventional oil and gas bearing formations. He has extensive experience working with technical and operational teams to explore, develop, and operate oil and gas fields. Additionally, he also has experience in evaluating acquisitions, budgeting expenditures and forecasting oil and gas production for financial performance projections

Mr. Taylor began his career as a Production/Operations Engineer where he developed skills in optimizing oil and gas production through down hole completion practices and various forms of artificial lift techniques.  He has added tremendous value to a number of fields by optimizing production and booking oil and gas reserves in compliance with SEC guidelines. Mr. Taylor has worked East Texas, Gulf Coast, and Michigan Basin projects onshore and both OCS Shelf and deepwater in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as  international projects in Thailand, Argentina, Romania, and Italy. His work experience includes Amoco Production Company, El Paso Oil and Gas Company, and Dominion Exploration and Production Company.

Mr. Taylor also stayed abreast of technological changes by attending numerous company and industry sponsored training programs.
