Through this one day distance learning Process Hazard Analysis/ Hazard and Operability Study (PHA/ HAZOP) overview you will learn the theory behind conducting these studies and why they matter. You will learn the principles behind each of the major PHA methods (HAZOP, What-if?, Checklist, FMEA) and the attributes of each methodology. 

This course is not just for the experts but is a valuable overview for anyone involved in hazard prevention and risk management at any level. No knowledge of the IEC 61511 guidelines or other standards is required to participate. Past course participants have ranged from Vice Presidents to Project Managers and Engineers.

Duration and Training Method

One day class provides 0.8 CEU (Continuing Education Credits) or 8 PDH (Professional Development Hours)

This course contains 6 technical hours and may be eligible for Continuous Maintenance points by The Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP)

Participants will learn to:

  1. Develop an understanding of process safety and Process Hazards Analysis (PHA)
  2. Understand how risk works, and the key elements of facility risk
  3. Define the most common PHA techniques
  4. Understand how to choose the best PHA methodology for the situation
  5. Identify what should be documented in a PHA
  6. Develop an understanding of requirements and expectations of a PHA team member

Who should attend

This course will be of benefit to anyone involved in PHAs as a participant but not as a leader of the group. Registrants do have the option to attend the full 3 day PHA/HAZOP Leadership Workshop if they wish to develop the ability to lead PHA studies.

Marcel Leal-Valias

Mr. Leal-Valias has more than 50 years of experience in engineering/design and project management in the petrochemical industry in North and South America and Australia and 27 years as a certified PHA specialist and trainer. He holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Centro de Treinamento Industrial, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and diplomas in Management and Supervision from People Growth Inc., Los Angeles, USA. Mr. Leal-Valias has conducted a multitude of PHA studies that comply with OSHA Process Safety Management guidelines in North and South America, the Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean and also has delivered P&ID and PHA training courses to many companies in Canada and overseas.

He is a member of ASET, the Society of Piping Engineers and Designers, Project Management Institute and the Canadian Institute of Energy.
