This course provides the foundation for understanding what a Geographic Information System is, what it can do, and how it is used in the oil and gas industry. Through course exercises, participants will work with ArcMap to visualize geographic data, create maps, query a GIS database, perform spatial analysis using common analysis tools, and solve geographic problems using a systematic approach. 

Duration and Training Method

A two-day classroom course comprising of hands-on classroom work, with participants completing exercises relevant to the petroleum industry using the ESRI ArcGIS software package. 

Participants will learn to:

  1. Demonstrate the structure of the ArcGIS Desktop software.
  2. Employ basic, generic GIS manipulation skills to enable utilization, management and creation of relevant E and P spatial datasets.
  3. llustrate the power of GIS, specifically a package such as ArcGIS, as a powerful integrator of both surface and sub-surface data.
  4. Operate the key elements of the ArcGIS package to create and edit E and P spatial data and integrate with other databases.
  5. Use the software to query a GIS database.
  6. Apply the software to edit geographic data.
  7. Employ attribute and spatial queries to extract information from geographic data.
  8. Construct maps, reports, and graphs.
